A Michelin technology primer
FB:Flexible beads (foldable tires)
RB: Rigid beads (steel wire)
ESC: Extra Supple Casing– highly flexible, cross-ply carcass with 110 TPI (420 threads/dm²) cord density, a technology used in top-of-the-line tires that helps them achieve the highest levels of performance.
HDC: High Density Casing – Special overlapping ply designed carcass with a cord density of 66 TPI (240 threads/dm2), which helps achieve the ideal balance between efficiency, a comfortable ride, puncture resistance and off-road casing durability.
HDPP: High Density Puncture Protector – strong, lightweight, interwoven anti-puncture reinforcement inserted under the center tread.
BBPP: Bead-to-Bead Puncture Protector is an additional casing ply that protects the sidewalls as well as the tread area.
IBBPP: Interwoven Bead-to-Bead Puncture Protector is a special interwoven material inserted between casing plies, protecting the entire carcass.
PP: Puncture Protector– under tread anti-puncture reinforcement (Lithion® tire model).
HPRS: High Protect Rim System – Protective strip that protects the bead area against wear from the rim. The HPRS is used on all flexible-bead Michelin® tires.
RS: Reflective sidewalls
SW: Lightweight skinwalls, with casing plies surrounded by a thin coat of rubber.
GW: Reinforced gum sidewalls with an extra rubber coating on the outside of the casing plies.
TPI: Threads Per Inch (English
measurement): the number of fabric threads per inch in a single ply
of the carcass of the tire. Also known as cord density.
Higher-quality tires have higher densities.
Unit conversion: 110 TPI = 420 threads/dm2, 60 TPI = 200 threads/dm2,
33 TPI = 110 threads/dm2.
SE: Silica Energy – Rubber mix reinforced with 100% silica for an optimized balance between rolling resistance and grip. Silica also helps shed mud in off-road applications.
DHCS: Downhill Soft Compound - special soft rubber compound specifically formulated to grip while downhill racing in extreme conditions.
TT:Tube type (tires that use inner tubes) - All Michelin® bicycle tires are tube-type unless indicated otherwise.
